This a a lofty ideal, but one which we can progress towards at our own rate. There is no hurry in this mindful journey.
Yoga is a body-mind-spirit practice that originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. Many people are first drawn to Yoga as a way to keep their minds and bodies fit while others come seeking help or relief for a specific issue like tension in a joint or a headache. Yoga strengthens the spine, internal organs and immune system, increases flexibility and body-mind-spirit awareness, and improves posture. Yoga is not referred to as exercise since it is more than that. It includes stress release, positive attitude, mindful practices, and relaxation. While there are many styles of yoga, in general, every style includes postures (asanas), meditation, and breathing techniques (pranayama). With regular practice, yoga builds physical strength and flexibility while reducing stress and improving the mind-body connection.
Yoga health benefits include reduced blood pressure, increased focus, a deeper spiritual mind/body connection, more energy, and better sleep at night. Many elements of yogic philosophy, such as loving kindness, compassion and non-judgment, may also influence an individual's lifestyle as they adopt healthier habits and make more positive, life-affirming choices. Yoga can change your life! to truly understand all the benefits derived from Yoga, you need to experience it yourself. Anyone can practice Yoga!
Finding the Right Yoga for You
Hatha yoga is the practice of conscious movement with several poses in each class. The Therapeutic Flow class is directed to the muscles and the Yin Yoga class compliments any active yoga or exercise and is targeted to the joints. During class, we provide adjustments or assists to help you better align your body, prevent injury, and better position your body in a specific posture. Consider positioning your mat near the instructor so you can see how the instructor is positioning her body. It is most important to listen to the wisdom of the body and if you hear the inner teacher telling you "no" come out of the pose and find a resting pose. At Jyoti Yoga Therapy, YogaPatricia, we are happy to work with all new students to find just the right beginner yoga practice for you.
You can practice with confidence knowing that we are specifically trained in Yoga Therapy to not only help you progress in your practice, but also to help prevent your body from being injured by linking your breath with your movement. The spiritual part of Yoga is entirely up to you!
